WELCOME
Welcome to all, old and new! :~)
Well, this week it's all good news. I know a lot of you have followed me on this journey of finding a new house, but for the new members, I'll run over it quickly and then let you all know what's happening :~)
I've been renting a house that was deemed unfit for human habitation 16 months ago, landlord refused to do anything with it, live wires hanging outta walls, broken windows and doors, leaky ceiling in living room etc etc etc
Been on the waiting list for a rental property for just about 2 years, as nothing ever becomes available here, and then today I got word that they finally had a house for me!! Wonder of wonders!
I got a house!!!! I am so happy, so excited I haven't had the keys yet, but my new next door neighbour invited me in to look around her house, as the houses are pretty much the same. Nice and compact, safe and warm, and in a lovely, quiet part of town. The garden is HUGE, so plenty work for the kids during summer... hehehe
They're as excited as I am, and when they see the garden they're going to feel like they're in heaven.
Anyway, I should be able to move in within the next month, possibly even within the next 2 weeks or so, I'll find out tomorrow. Gonna be a lot of work with packing 4 kids worth of stuff, but it's going to be great. Unfortunately, with all the work involved it's going to mean that my time online is going to be quite erratic for a while :~(
Now, my immediate goal is to sell 100 more copies of "Forget The Hype!" within the next month, so that I have a little extra money to make the move extra special for the kids, so I'm off to promote it more :~)
Until next time, get those votes in, get those interviews in, come visit me in my conference room and above all...
Enjoy Reading!
May you be happy and prosperous in everything you do!

4 critical factors when choosing web hosting
Copyright 2005 Arvind Gawade
With the hundreds of web hosting companies out there competing with one another to offer the “best” web hosting package on the internet and with all the hype that goes along with it, its easy to get confused or perhaps even purchase the package that is not right for us. Here are 4 essentials to look out for when choosing a web hosting platform for your website/business.
1. The reputation of the web hosting company.
Most web hosting companies on the web have been in existence for at least 2 years and they are usually handled by experience and IT savvy network engineers who can provide the necessary support and services to their customers. However, there are also several “mom and pop” set ups out there which are handled by amateurs who are greedy to make plenty of your own money without even knowing how to do something as fundamental as setting up your user account.
Be sure to check the credentials of the web hosting firm by either reading their about us or the technology they use for their server farm. Make sure you pick a company that has been around for at the very least 2 years and have a successful track record with 95% up time for all its servers. That’s a reasonable expectation as 100% is not a realistic aim in the computing world.
2. How much of storage space are you given?
Most web companies out the offer space that range from as small as 20 MB to as big as 2GB or even more. However, this depends largely upon you the user. Make sure you do not get sold into buying more space then you need. This is a common trend amongst novice web owners who tend to feel that the bigger space the better and the more powerful their website can be. That is the most contorted statement I have ever heard in my 5 years as a IT expert and internet marketing consultant.
Personally, I would recommend you to use Host4profit as your hosting company because I find that they provide the most innovative packages that even reward you by paying you to be a member & in many other ways too one of which includes a trip to the Bahamas. Find out more at http://www.host4profit.com/632628
3. What is the available bandwidth space for you to transfer data each month?
We all need to transfer data to our website and update its content often in order to stay afresh and also to keep our ratings high up on the search engines right? Well all web hosting companies offer a certain bandwidth or “transfer window” if you will to enable you transport your data from your local computer hard disk drive to your web server. However this transfer window has a limited space. This is set to prevent the servers on their side from having a bandwidth overload from users repeatedly transferring large amounts of data to and fro without any limits being set.
A bandwidth space is allocated to enable you to manage the amount data that you want to transfer each month into the storage space allocated. Note that the data you transfer is constantly kept track of until you have reach the transfer limit for that month. Most web hosting companies tend to be stingy on this so as to provide so called “high speed data transfer” to their clients. They usually cap this bandwidth off at 1GB. Host4profit however offers its client a 3GB bandwidth per month. Can you see why everybody is switching to Host4profit now?
4. The support provided both online and offline to ensure you can sleep soundly at night.
This is the area that is overlooked most often whenever the novice webmaster signs up for a webhosting contract. It is absolutely important ( burn this into your head) I repeat absolutely important to ensure that you get a web hosting company that will answer your calls and ensure your website stays up and running even if you call them at 2 am in the morning to request for help. I am talking about 24 hours support everyday of the week and also relevant safety measures implemented in the data center at which your server resides.
I highly recommend you find out more about the location of the data center about the power supply facilities, where it is situated and also the safety measures that have been put in place such as fire protection and relevant data backup facilities to a remote location as a safety should a physical destruction occur that literally wipes out the whole data center ( although I think this is highly unlikely unless George Lucas must have been tingling with the wrong button at his huge animation studios and manage to bring Darth Vader back to life).

PHP Scripts Don't Have to End in .PHP
Copyright © 2005 By Robert Plank
If you tweak your site to perform better in search rankings then you
practice the science of Search Engine Optimization (SEO). It's possible to
start using PHP scripts on your site without losing that high ranking of
yours.
You've probably noticed your site rise and fall in search engine rankings
quite a bit. That's just how it goes since search engines such as Google
like to change their algorithms around.
If one day you decide to rename all the files on your site you can be sure
your Google listing will moved off page 1 of your target search keyword onto
the back-listings of page 67 and beyond.
When you rename a file on your site, and another site links to that file,
anyone coming to your site thru that particular link will get an error.
When a search engine crawler sees this, it decides your site and decides
either to lower your ranking or delete the URL from its search results
entirely.
Search engines don't want to send their visitors to Not-Found pages... makes
sense, doesn't it?
Okay, so let's say you don't want to have a ton of broken links across your
site, which will cause you to drop in the search results, but you want to
tinker with PHP a little bit.
There's an easy fix for that. You can actually name your PHP scripts so
that they end in .htm or .html, and have them run as PHP scripts on your web
server. So from the outside world it'll look as if your site is full of
"updated-by-hand" content.
All you have to do is add this line to your .htaccess file:
AddType application/x-httpd-php .html .htm
If you don't have an .htaccess file, all you have to do is put that line of
code up there into a new text file, save it as ".htaccess" (with the dot in
front) then upload it to your web server.
As soon as you set this up, try going back to your site. Everything should
look exactly the same, with the exception that your HTML pages are all now
PHP-enabled.
So you could setup a simple script like the one here:
http://www.jumpx.com/tutorials/1
... And put that on any HTML page of yours. It will work exactly the same
as if the file ended in .php instead of .html. Neat, huh?
You could even go crazy and change that line of htaccess code to add in more
weird file extensions, for example:
AddType application/x-httpd-php .html .htm .ezine
This would parse any page ending in .html, .htm, or .ezine as PHP. So you
could name a file something crazy like "subscribe.ezine" and it would work
as a PHP script, or in other words as an HTML file with PHP tags in any
place you want them.
For thank you pages sometimes I like to make the extension .thanks or .order
just to make it harder to guess.
If you wanted to go totally nuts, you could even put something like this in
your .htaccess file:
DefaultType application/x-httpd-php
With that, any file without an extension (so if you named a file "download"
instead of "download.php") will be "assumed" to be a PHP file. Any
unrecognized extension would default to PHP.
The reason I say you can go totally nuts with this is because now you can
now name a file to something that isn't already used -- like site.blog, or
form.feedback, subscriber.area or bonus.page.
